Size/Age: 2-year seedling, 8-12 inches tall
USDA Growing Zones: Zones 5-8
Pawpaw (Asimina triloba) is North America's largest native fruit and a valuable addition to any hunting property. These 2-year seedlings are ready to be planted out directly into full sun. Although pawpaw regenerate in our forests, they are farm more productive in an open orchard or savannah context.
Our Pawpaw seedlings are grown from seed collected from superior grafted trees known for large fruit size and productivity. Each seedling is carefully grown in a deep and air pruning containers or beds to develop strong roots and ensure successful transplanting.
Pawpaw trees produce large, tropical-like fruits with a custard texture and flavor reminiscent of banana and mango. These nutritious fruits are eagerly consumed by deer, raccoons, opossums, and other wildlife in late summer to early fall, creating a natural food plot in an otherwise lean time.
Benefits for Wildlife/Hunters:
Creates natural edge habitat preferred by deer for travel and bedding
Fruits ripen in late summer/early fall when other food sources may be scarce
Provides cover and browse for deer throughout the year
Establishes a native food source that requires minimal maintenance
Planting Instructions: Pawpaws naturally grow as understory trees along forest edges, but 2+ year old trees can be planted in full sun. Orchard spacing is 8-10 ft apart with 15ft between rows. We find protection from wind in early years really helps in establishment so protect with a tree tube.
Care Requirements: Water regularly during establishment. Prefers rich, slightly acidic, well-drained soil with consistent moisture. Apply mulch to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
Shipping Notes: Ships potted or bare-root depending on season. Pawpaws have sensitive root systems and do not like to be transplanted often, plant promptly upon arrival and avoid disturbing roots.
