Size/Age: 2-year grafted tree, 24-36 inches tall
USDA Growing Zones: Zones 5-9
Our grafted Chinese Chestnuts represent the elite selection of Castanea mollissima cultivars. Each tree is carefully grafted onto vigorous rootstock to preserve the exact genetic characteristics of this superior variety, ensuring consistent performance.
We focus on Qing, Kor, Sleeping Giant, and many others we are learning about as we have a small role in the Missouri State grant for superior chestnut genetics.
Grafted chestnuts will sometimes suffer from delayed graft failure, and it can be a hard sell for the cost benefit when seedling trees are much hardier, in our own orchards we graft 20% to ensure diversity and including some proven winners in the planting scheme.
Benefits for Wildlife/Hunters:
Larger nut size attracts and holds deer on your property
Proven genetics ensure reliable performance
Planting Instructions: Plant in well-drained soil in full sun to light shade. Space trees 40 feet apart for optimal growth and nut production.
Care Requirements: Water deeply and regularly during the first two growing seasons. Apply organic mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Minimal pruning required, focus on removing any damaged branches and maintaining good airflow through the canopy.
Shipping Notes: Ships in container with soil to protect the valuable grafted union and root system. Plant promptly upon arrival and water thoroughly. Protect from extreme conditions during establishment.
